- About RNW
RNW promotes free speech through independent journalism and the use of new media. We create thought-provoking content for young people around the globe and provide a safe space for them to tell their stories and exchange ideas.
RNW is an independent media organisation active in China and 17 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Arab world, where freedom of expression is severely restricted. RNW offers information unavailable in local media because of legislation or taboos.
RNW works on an equal footing with media organisations around in the world on the dissemination of free speech. The need for this remains undiminished. Only one in six people live in a country with a free press. The number of people with free access to independent media worldwide is at the lowest level in ten years.
Youths and young adults (aged 15 to 30) are RNW’s primary target audience. In our target areas, young people make up the majority of the population, and are a source of energy and change. Interaction and participation via internet and social media are essential to young people. RNW responds to this by entering into conversation with its target audiences and stimulating co-creation.
How we work
RNW offers high-quality journalistic productions appropriate to the context in a language spoken locally. In highly repressive countries we provide content via our own media platforms; where possible we work in partnership with local media organisations. Ideally this will lead to high quality local media production independent of RNW. The most appropriate media platforms will be chosen for each area, making particular use of new and social media.
