Chinese artist joins Syrian rebels

A Chinese artist has joined the Free Syrian Army. In an exclusive video, obtained by RNW, Chen Weiming says that he decided to fight with the rebel forces because they are "protecting children, women and other innocent civilians".

The video, which was made by Egyptian journalist Ahmed Samir, shows the Chinese activist in a military uniform together with the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo. Chen Weiming said, "I know full well that I could be killed in Syria, but I do not fear death if it helps an oppressed people".

In 1989, Chen Weiming took part in the protests in Tiananmen Square. Afterwards, Chen fled China. He currently lives in the United States, where he is trying to raise awareness about the Chinese authorities' efforts to control and persecute activists and independent writers.
