Cross-border skating still banned for Flemings

This article is part of the RNW archive. RNW is the former Radio Netherlands Worldwide or Wereldomroep, which was founded as the Dutch international public broadcaster in 1947. In 2011, the Dutch government decided to cut funding and shift RNW from the ministry of Education, Culture and Science to the ministry of Foreign Affairs. Skating fever has not only gripped the Dutch, their Flemish neighbours to the south have also been touched. Many canals in Belgium are frozen and skaters are flocking to the ice there too. But one canal, the Damme near Bruges, is still off-limits.

This skating stretch, the most popular in Flanders, is an oddity because it passes from Belgian territory into the Dutch province of Zeeland. But the ice thickness is below the safe minimum of 11cm, so crossing the border is out - for now.
