RNW archive

This article is part of the RNW archive. RNW is the former Radio Netherlands Worldwide or Wereldomroep, which was founded as the Dutch international public broadcaster in 1947. In 2011, the Dutch government decided to cut funding and shift RNW from the ministry of Education, Culture and Science to the ministry of Foreign Affairs. More information about RNW Media’s current activities can be found at

When we were discussing how to mark the passing of RNW’s English service, I somehow managed to volunteer to put together a slideshow of faces down the ages.

Many of them will be less than familiar even to our regular listeners simply because, for many of the past decades, we were a radio station. It may be the 'most visual medium' there is (who said that?) but it doesn’t actually let you see what the makers look like.

In the 27 years I’ve been working here a lot of voices have passed under the bridge, as it were, but there are also a lot of people who were not normally to be found behind a microphone.

These days, our faces can sometimes be seen on the website atop the articles (yes, I’m afraid that is me up there) but there are still other colleagues who were and are neither seen nor heard.

So, before we go, here are some of the faces - past and present - behind the voices and behind the scenes.
