A Dutch military operation in Afghanistan to protect a police training mission has been described by military personnel as "a shambles". They told public broadcaster NOS on Sunday that they're short on equipment, munitions and bullet-proof vests.

The training of Afghan police recruits by instructors from the Netherlands' police force, the actual aim of the mission, has not yet begun in earnest. But the military say that the logistical problems are enormous, and that they can't do much but wait and watch their German and US colleagues.
