RNW.nl has gone social!
Our new social media bar allows you to bookmark, share and email our content to your heart’s content. You can also sign in – with your RNW account or another, like Facebook or Twitter – and track your favourite articles, comments and more.
Ready to start? Here’s our how-to guide:
Take a tour
It’s possible that our brand new social media bar has appeared on your screen without you even noticing... so look down, all the way down, to the bottom of the page... see that grey bar there? That’s it! Before you even log in, you’ll see “Tweet”, “Like” and “Share” options. If you log in, you’ll also see a little world icon, a star icon and your name/photo. Finally, you’ll notice “Logout”, “?” and a little white arrow hovering above it all. Read on for more on each option!
The best place to start actually isn’t in our social media bar at all, but in the top right corner of the page. There you can click “login” to use our own sharing platform, or click one of the icons to sign in with your Facebook/Twitter/Google/Flickr account. A window will pop up asking permission to post content to these accounts.
When you click “allow” or “agree” you’ll be sent to an RNW page where you can fill in a little more information about yourself. It looks like a lot, but don’t worry – it only has to be done once and only a couple of fields are required (the ones with little red stars). The more you fill in, the better we can customise your browsing experience at RNW.nl. If you choose not to fill everything in, or later change your mind, you can always go to “Your RNW” and edit your profile.
Now that you’ve logged in, we hope you won’t want to log out right away, but in case you do, all you have to do is click on the “logout” in the social media bar at the bottom of the screen, OR in the grey bar at the top right of the screen (next to the search function).
If you click the “Tweet” link, a box will pop up with a short message (which you can edit!) and a link to the page you were reading. If you click on “tweet”, the message will be sent out to all your Twitter followers.
“Liking” an article is a little different from “tweeting”. If you click “like”, a link to the article will be posted to your Facebook page telling your friends that you like the link. If, on the other hand, you’d prefer to write a comment to go with the link, you’ll want to use the “share” option.
“Share” gives you more options to share the articles that you like on RNW.nl. If you click on the little blue triangle, a box will pop up with a variety of options, including Facebook, Twitter, Hyves, LinkedIn, Google+, Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Tumblr, Blogger and Mail. These will open another tab or window allowing you to post an article to the site of your choice.
If your favourite social media platform isn’t on the list, let us know – if we get enough requests at email@example.com, we might just add it. In the meantime you can always copy and paste the link at the top of the screen.
Next on the social media bar you’ll see a little world symbol. If you click this, you’ll go to “Your RNW”. You’ll also go there if you click on your name just a little further to the right. At “Your RNW” you can do lots of things, including: edit your profile, upload a photo, subscribe – or unsubscribe – to newsletters, see which articles you visited recently, read reactions from other visitors on your comments, and so on.
Something else you might notice is a little red number above the world icon – this means somebody’s commented on an article somewhere on the website. You can see the latest comments on the right-hand side of the page under “recent reactions”. Reply to other users and see what happens – you might just start an interesting conversation with somebody from the other side of the world!
Add to favourites
Next to the world icon, you’ll see a little star – click this to add the article to your RNW bookmarks. To find a list of articles you’ve added, click on the world icon or your name to go to “Your RNW”. From there, click on the “bookmarks” tab.
Hiding the social media bar
Are you working on a very small screen? If so, you might want to hide the social media bar. That’s easy to do – just click the little white triangle above the “logout” and “?” options. Want to get the bar back again? Even when the bar is hidden, the arrow is still there – click again and the bar will reappear.
