Photographs have been uncovered that seem to show the execution of Indonesian civilians by Dutch soldiers in the late 1940s. The four pictures were found in a photo album that had been donated to the Enschede municipal archives by relatives of a man who was deployed in the Dutch East Indies.

It is well established that Dutch troops used extreme violence during two military offensives to stamp out the Indonesians' struggle for independence. But it is the first time that photographs of executions have emerged.

The pictures have generated renewed calls for a proper investigation into the Netherlands' colonial past in Indonesia.
