Protestors on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao claim that a travel bill proposed by Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin is discriminatory,
The protest, organised by the popular Aliansa Patriótiko movement, targets restrictions in the bill on free travel within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Curaçao is a part of the kingdom.
Aliansa says that the proposed law will turn Antillians and Arubans into second-rate citizens of the kingdom. They are distributing publicity material displaying the slogan "Stop Dutch Apartheid".
The Curaçao island council and the parliaments of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba have all unanimously adopted motions criticising Minister Hirsch Ballin's proposal.
The protests come on the eve of renewed negotiations between the Netherlands and the six Caribbean islands about their constitutional relations within the kingdom.
