This article is part of the RNW archive. RNW is the former Radio Netherlands Worldwide or Wereldomroep, which was founded as the Dutch international public broadcaster in 1947. In 2011, the Dutch government decided to cut funding and shift RNW from the ministry of Education, Culture and Science to the ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dutch researchers say they will produce the world's first test-tube hamburger by the end of the year. Dr. Mark Post of the University of Maastricht has been trying to manufacture artificial meat for years now, but he ran out of money. Now he has received some major donations on condition that he produce a test-tube hamburger by the end of 2012.

The test-tube meat still requires as much energy as normal meat, but it's a cleaner alternative. Cattle farming harms the environment because cows need a lot of food and produce large amounts of greenhouse gases.
