RNW Media creates and maintains digital platforms in restrictive settings that enable young women and men from across political, ethnic, racial, regional or religious divides to come together in a way which is often impossible in the offline space. These platforms function as alternative online civic spaces – and can also come under threat from illiberal regimes. Network disruptions and large-scale shut-downs have become increasingly common in recent years and RNW Media is joining forces with organisations working to extend and defend digital rights around the world.
As part of a range of activities in support of SPEAK 2019, RNW Media is hosting an event at de Balie in Amsterdam focusing on digital access in restrictive settings. In partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event will bring together a panel of experts to discuss the challenges and potential solutions while RNW Media colleagues from Africa and MENA will share on-the-ground realities of digital rights violations
The event will conclude with the opportunity to network with top donors, thinkers and activists fighting for (online) civic space.
