History of RNW Media

We are proud to have 75 years of experience in the media sector, over
50 years as a training centre and more than 10 years
in building digital
solutions with and for young people.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide

RNW was founded in 1947 as the Dutch international public broadcaster working with media professionals around the world, thus developing a thorough understanding of the role of media in development. Our training centre furthered that knowledge and expertise.

Since 2013, RNW Media transformed, with renewed support from the Dutch Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, into an international media organisation using free speech to build digital ‘safe spaces’ as a place for young people to express themselves and get their voices heard to bring about change in their societies.

By 2020, RNW Media has supported 24,4 million young people around the world with safe spaces to connect, find fact-based information and share their voice, as well as building a ‘digital media for social change’ network of independent partners working across 4 continents.
