Freedom of speech

RNW defends and promotes free speech through independent journalism and the use of new media. We create thought-provoking content with and for young people from all around the globe and organise a safe space where young people can form opinions and tell their stories. We engage with a young generation who are unable or are prevented from doing this for themselves.

RNW has chosen to focus on three core themes that have a powerful influence on a society’s level of openness and freedom.

• Democracy and good governance
• Human rights
• Sexual rights

All over the world, people are thrown in jail because of a different opinion. Defamed because of sexual orientation. Killed because of openness.

Free speech can’t be taken for granted by millions of young people worldwide. Social convention, government repression, traditional taboos, poverty, conflict, all prevent people from speaking their minds.
