European Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn says it is essential that the Netherlands keep to its promise to reduce its budget deficit to less than three percent by 2013.

Following talks with Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager he said he was confident this would be achieved.

“The Netherlands has a strong tradition of sustainable state finances which has been good for the country and for its people. I have every confidence the Netherlands will perpetuate this tradition and make good its promise as one of the main advocates of budgetary discipline.”

The cabinet may decide to make billions of euros of additional spending cuts in order to reduce the deficit. This should become clear next month.
