US magazine TIME has declared Joran van der Sloot's arrest in Peru last May the most important crime event of 2010.

Other cases in TIME's crime top ten include the Belgian parachute murder, the stabbing incidents at Chinese schools and the kidnapping of 14-year-old American girl Elizabeth Smart, who was seized from her bedroom.

TIME has also published rankings for other topics, including advertising, trends on Facebook, books, disasters, gadgets and religion.

Joran van der Sloot is accused of murdering a Peruvian woman, Stephany Flores. He is also suspected of involvement in the disappearance from the Caribbean holiday island of Aruba of US teenager Natalee Holloway.
